The Iowa State University Cyclones reside in Ames, Iowa. The Cyclones play in one the North Division of the Big XII Conference. Iowa State plays its home schedule games at Jack Trice Stadium, renamed Cyclones Stadium in 2002. Iowa State was known as the “Cardinals” until Iowa State defeated Northwestern 36-0 in 1895, prompting a Chicago Tribune headline which read: “Struck by a Cyclone”. The article went on to say, “Northwestern might as well have tried to play football with an Iowa cyclone as with the team it met yesterday.” Iowa State has been known as the Cyclones ever since. Gene Chizik enters his 2^nd season as head coach, and hopes his line-up will make enough improvement over the fall schedule to earn a spot in one of the New Year’s Day bowl games.

The Cyclones have never had a Heisman Trophy winner, nor have they ever won a BCS National Championship. The head coach hopes to continue improving talent through recruiting to attract NCAA Football players who will be future NFL players and first round picks, and compete for a conference championship in the challenging Big 12.

The 2008-2009 schedule has Cyclone fans excited. The fall schedule features several college football games which are sure to feature a sold-out stadium because of the demand for tickets and parking passes. The game at UNLV concludes the non-conference schedule. The rivalry game at Iowa highlights the away games. The game known as Cy-Hawk features Iowa vs. Iowa State, with the winner receiving the Cy-Hawk Trophy, one of the best traditions in the entire NCAA. Ticket prices, standing room only seating, and great tailgating reflect how important this game is. The home schedule features games with the other two rivals: Iowa State vs. Nebraska and Iowa State vs. Missouri.
