The San Diego Chargers belong to the American Football Conference in the National Football League. The Chargers compete in the AFC West Division, and their primary rivals are the Oakland Raiders, Kansas City Chiefs, and Denver Broncos. The NFL West team, known as "The Bolts" to local fans, plays their home games at Qualcomm Stadium in San Diego, CA. The Cal stadium is formerly known as Jack Murphy Stadium and San Diego Stadium. Second year head coach Norv Turner finished the 2007 schedule with an 11-5 record and a 1^st place finished in the AFC West. The impressive season, which concluded with the Chargers winning six consecutive games, was made possible by the tremendous play of star RB Ladanian Tomlinson, also known as "LT". 2^nd year starting QB Phillip Rivers made great strides and played through pain, supported by tremendous TE Antonio Gates. The defense was again led by LB Shawn Merriman, and he was helped by first time Pro-Bowl CB Antonio Cromartie.

The Chargers actually began its history in Los Angeles, though the 2^nd season was played in San Diego. They're well known for their polarizing powder blue uniforms. Team owner Alex Spanos is a California native, and bought majority ownership in 1984. Although throughout their history, the Chargers have a sub .500 record, the reigning AFC West Champs have won 3 of the last 4 division crowns, an extremely difficult task in the NFL. Overall, the Chargers boast 13 division titles, 1 AFC Championship, and 1 league title.

The 2008 season holds a lot of promise for Charger coaches, players and fans. Had they been able to score touchdowns rather than settling for field goals in the 2007 AFC Championship game, it might have been a Chargers-Giants Super Bowl. Filled with star players all over the field, the Chargers will strengthen their roster via free agency and the draft. The Chargers have added offensive line and linebacker depth, and signed backup QB Billy Volek to a new 3 year deal. Armed with a history of tremendous draft picks, GM A. J. Smith has 5 selections with which to improve his club, including the 27^th overall pick. Happy with Smith's work, Team President Dean Spanos extended the GM's contract by 5 years, running through 2014.
