The Buffalo Bills compete in the rugged AFC East Division of the National Football League. The Bills division rivals are the New England Patriots, the New York Jets, and the Miami Dolphins. The Bills play their home games at Ralph Wilson Stadium in Orchard Park, New York, a suburb of Buffalo, NY. The stadium is named after owner Ralph Wilson, owner of the Bills since 1959. Buffalo Head Coach Dick Jauron went 7-9 last year, his first season with the team. The Bills were in playoff contention until the final weeks of the regular season, when they lost three straight heartbreaking games. The Bills played inspired football, motivated by the season ending spinal cord injury to Kevin Everett. Although the Bills narrowly missed the playoffs, they did learn a lot about their team's core nucleus. 2007 1st round pick Marshawn Lynch brought instant credibility to the running back position, finishing 11th in the NFL in rushing yards. Trent Edwards had some very strong moments at QB, though splitting time at the position. Edwards has two great targets to throw to in Lee Evans and Josh Reed.
The Bills are known for having some of the most passionate fans in the AFC and the NFL. Their passion was built by sustained success, especially throughout the decade of the 1990's. Former Bills Head Coach and NFL Hall of Fame Inductee Marv Levy had one of the more spectacular runs in NFL history, guiding the Bills to 4 consecutive Super Bowls and AFC Titles. More often than not it takes talent to be successful, and Levy had some of the league's best talent in Hall of Famers Jim Kelly and Thurman Thomas at quarterback and running back. On defense, the Bills were led by future Hall of Fame defensive end Bruce Smith. Together, they made up one of the most potent line-ups in NFL history.
The current Bills staff and roster are looking to build off of the success of the 2007 season, and take the next step in 2008. The Bills first steps toward that end were signing free agents Marcus Stroud, Kawika Mitchell, and Spencer Johnson. The other strategy involves adding quality players to the roster via the draft. The Bills have an incredible 10 picks in the 2008 draft, including the 11th overall pick. Buffalo is most likely to select either a cornerback or wide receiver. The top cornerback targets are Leodis McKelvin and Mike Jenkins. If the Bills take a wide receiver, former Oklahoma WR Malcolm Jenkins is the likely pick.
