The Atlanta Falcons compete in the National Football Conference of the National Football League. The Falcons NFC South Division rivals are the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Carolina Panthers, and New Orleans Saints. The Falcons Stadium is the Georgia Dome located in Atlanta, Georgia, and has a seating capacity of 71,250. The Falcons moved their training facility to beautiful Flowery Branch, Georgia, after the 2004 season. Owner Arthur Blank was left in a bad situation by former coach Bobby Petrino, who left after just 13 games. Given that and other major off the field distractions the team faced, it's understandable that the 2007 NFL Schedule was completed with just a 4-12 record and a 4^th place finish in the NFC West. No other NFC or NFL team had to deal with as many off the field distractions as did the Falcons. There were some notable performances on the field, led by stars Roddy White, John Abraham, and Chris Redman.

The Atlanta Falcons joined the NFL as an expansion team in 1966. They have produced 3 division titles, 1 conference title, and have appeared in one Super Bowl in 1998. The 1998 Conference Championship season was one of the best in team history, going 14-2 in the regular season, and beating the then 15-1 Minnesota Vikings for the conference title. The Falcons were the talk of the NFL that season.

The 2008 season will be full of change. Former star quarterback Michael Vick won't dominate the headlines, and the team will be able to fully concentrate on the fundamentals of football. On January 23^rd, Arthur Blank announced that Mike Smith would be the Atlanta Falcons new head coach. Smith had previously been the defensive coordinator for the Jacksonville Jaguars. Smith and his staff hit the ground running, being extremely active in the free agent market, guided by newly named General Manager Thomas Dimitroff. Dimitroff was named GM by Blank on January 13^th, 2008 after serving as the Patriots Director of College Scouting. Some of Dimitroff's biggest moves have been re-signing QB Chris Redman, wooing RB Michael Turner to Atlanta from San Diego, and trading troubled CB Deangelo Hall to the Oakland Raiders for 2 draft picks. The Falcons have 11 picks in the 2008 NFL Draft, and are excited about drafting great NFL players but also players who will meet the intensity demanded by the Smith and his coaching staff.
