The St. Louis Cardinals play in the National League of Major League Baseball. The Cardinals reside in the NL Central Division and compete against division rivals the Chicago Cubs, Houston Astros, Pittsburgh Pirates, Cincinnati Reds, and Milwaukee Brewers. The STL Cardinals play their home schedule at Busch Stadium in St. Louis, Missouri, which has a seating capacity of 46,861. The Cardinals Stadium opened in 2006, and is widely regarded as one of the nicest stadiums in MLB. The St. Louis Cardinals Manager is Tony La Russa, who completed his 11th season in 2007, is only one of two managers in MLB history two have one a World Series in the American and National Leagues. At the completion of the 2007 MLB Schedule, La Russa guided the Cardinals to a 78-84 record and a 3rd place finish in the NL Central. It marked only the 2nd time since 1999 that the Cardinals failed to make the playoffs. Despite the disappointing record, especially because of the Cardinals tradition of excellence, the team did enjoy great individual performances. Adam Wainwright pitched well but suffered from a lack of run support; Albert Pujols had another record setting season; Chris Carpenter was sidelined for most of 2007 due to elbow problems; Jason Isringhausen continued to be lights out of the back of the rotation; and Rick Ankiel became one of the best stories in baseball, coming back to the major leagues as an outfielder instead of a pitcher.
The Cardinals franchise was established in 1892, and they've had a tremendous amount of success during that time. The Cardinals have won 10 World Series titles, which is the most of any National League team and trails only the Yankees overall. The Cardinals were World Series Champions in 1926, 1931, 1934, 1942, 1944, 1946, 1964, 1967, 1982, and 2006. The most recent title was won against a heavily favored Detroit Tigers ball club. In addition, St. Louis has won the league 17 times. That volume of success can only be accomplished with elite talent, something the Cardinals have never lacked. They have retired 10 jerseys in their history, 9 being former players and coaches and one for the long time owner. The retired numbers are 1, Ozzie Smith; 2, Red Schoendienst; 6, Stan Musial; 9, Enos Slaughter; 14, Ken Boyer; 17, Dizzy Dean; 20, Lou Brock; 42, Bruce Sutter; 45, Bob Gibson; and 85, August (Gussie) Busch. Current owner William DeWitt Jr. has been majority owner since 1995, the prior to La Russa's arrival.
The 2008 season will bring change, starting at the top. Long time GM Walt Jocketty was relieved of his duties and was replaced by current GM John Mozeliak. Jocketty had been GM for the last 12 seasons. Mozeliak immediately had the responsibility of bolstering the starting pitching staff, looking to improve upon the ERA. St. Louis reached an extension with Joel Pineiro and added former All-Star Matt Clement to the rotation. They also had to find a solution at SS since David Eckstein wasn't retained. Cezar Izturis was signed as a possible replacement. The Cardinals exchanged 3B with the Toronto Blue Jays, bringing over Troy Glaus. The Cardinals are highly motivated to not miss out on the playoffs at the conclusion of the 2008 season.
