The Oakland Athletics play in the American League of Major League Baseball. Owner Lewis Wolff led a team who purchased the A's in 2005 and inherited highly successful GM Billy Beane, who's been in this capacity since 1997. Beane has been credited for developing a new way to field successful teams despite having payroll constraints.

Beane intends for the 2008 season to yield better results than were had in 2007. Constantly building and shifting, Beane sent Dan Haren to the Diamondbacks for 6 players. The A's also traded 1B Nick Swisher in exchange for 3 players. The A's like to look for players who will fit their system, and have been highly successful in signing players who have been waived by other teams. Confirming Beane's approach, the Athletics are tied for 1^st in the AL West with the L.A. Angels, despite $72 MIL difference in payrolls.
