The New York Mets reside in the National League of Major League Baseball. The Mets compete in the NL East against divisional rivals the Atlanta Braves, Florida Marlins, Philadelphia Phillies, and Washington Nationals. The Mets play their home games at Shea Stadium in Flushing, New York, which has a seating capacity of 57,343 and is the only stadium in MLB which has orange foul poles. Manager Willie Randolph completed his 3^rd season as Mets skipper by finishing the 2007 MLB Schedule with a 88-74 record and a 2^nd place finish in the National League East. The Mets endured a very disappointing collapse at the end of 2007, one that certainly will motivate them to reach the World Series in 2008. The 2007 season was a banner one for star players Carolos Beltran, Jose Reyes, and David Wright. Both Pedro Martinez and Carlos Delgado were hampered by nagging injuries. GM Omar Minaya would look add players who would help the Mets reach the next level, and was extremely successful in doing so, signing the baseball's best available free agent.

The Mets Franchise was established in 1962, and struggled for the first few seasons, including going 40-120 in their inaugural season. They got it all corrected in 1969; led by Tom Seaver the Mets won the first of their two World Series Championships. The other World Series title came in 1986, when the Mets finished with a 108-54 record and the 3^rd most wins in National League history. Their World Series victory over the Boston Red Sox remains one of the lasting moments in MLB History, as a routine ground ball scooted through the legs of a Red Sox allowing the Mets to get a come from behind win in game six. The Mets remain the only team in MLB History to go from being one strike away from losing the World Series to winning the World Series. Owner Fred Wilpon purchased the majority portion of the team in 1980, making the right front office moves to get the Mets to the 1986 Championship. The Mets have retired the numbers of their truly elite players: Number 14, Gil Hodges; 37 Casey Stengel; and 41, Tom Seaver.

Entering the 2008 Season, GM Omar Minaya made the biggest splash of any team on the free agent market, bring Cy Young Award Winning left-hander Johan Santana to the Mets from the Minnesota Twins. Santana should be the missing piece to get the Mets over the hump, and certainly should prevent them from experiencing a collapse like they had at the end of 2007. The Mets also sent prospect Lastings Milledge to the Washington Nationals for OF Ryan Church and C Ryan Schneider. The Mets are the favorites to win the NL East title in 2008.
