The Boston Red Sox belong to the American League of Major League Baseball. The Red Sox compete in the AL East Division against main rivals the Baltimore Orioles, Toronto Blue Jays, Tampa Bay Rays, and hated New York Yankees. Not only do the Red Sox and Yankees battle for AL East crowns, they also battle for top spot in the race for baseball's most followed team. The Red Sox have some of the best fans and best tradition of any team in America. The Sox were established in 1901 in the newly formed American League. The Red Sox quickly had success, evidenced by their 1903 and 1904 league championships. In all the Red Sox have won league championships in 1903 and 04, 1912, 1915, 1916, 1918, 1946, 1967, 1975, 1986, 2004, and 2007. Team Owners John Henry and Tom Werner purchased the Red Sox in 2002, with a goal to bring a World Series to Boston. The feat was accomplished in 2004, and a major cog in the wheel of success was and is GM Theo Epstein. When Epstein was hired in 2002, he became the youngest GM in the history of baseball. The 3 Red Sox leaders have produced 2 World Series titles in 5 years, after an 86 year drought.

Buoyed by last season's title, Red Sox nation expects to have another spectacular season. The Red Sox will again challenge for division, league and overall supremacy this season. As to be expected from Epstein, the Red Sox were very active in the off-season, primarily extending contracts on current players Tim Wakefield, Mike Lowell, Curt Schilling, and Kevin Youkilis. The Red Sox did bring in free agent 1B Sean Casey, who should add a lot to an already potent line-up.
