When the English rock band Led Zeppelin formed in 1968, group members Jimmy Page (guitar), Robert Plant (vocals, harmonica), John Paul Jones (bass, guitar, keyboards) and John Bonham (drums, percussion) did not anticipate their future fame and world-wide success. Since the release of their self-titled debut album, Led Zeppelin have sold more than 300 million albums worldwide, and have been ranked the fourth top selling artist in the United States. As one of the first heavy metal bands ever, the group is regarded as the biggest band of the 1970’s. Led Zeppelin’s songs are heavily guitar-driven, incorporating rhythms from several different genres, including blues, folk, reggae and rockabilly. Unlike most successful music groups, Led Zeppelin decided against releasing popular singles from their albums, wishing instead to be more album-oriented. Their ground-breaking music has had a broad influence on music today and the group is well-respected for their artistic achievements. In December of 1980, Led Zeppelin announced their disbandment following the death of John Bonham that September. Twenty-five years later, the band received a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award. The surviving members of the group reunited with John Bonham’s son, Jason Bonham, for a benefit concert in London to help raise money for the Ahmet Ertegün Education Fund, helping college students from the UK, US and Turkey pay for their tuition.
